Addiction

Addiction. It is a big word. When most people think of addiction, they think of alcohol or drugs. An addiction can be sex, food or anything for that matter. My addictions were mostly drug related.

After going through an abusive childhood, I found myself on a road that could have ended my life early. What started as getting drunk led to cocaine use. All of the sudden as was ingesting multiple substances. At 17, I started shooting up speed balls. It was a potent mix of cocaine and heroine that killed John Belushi and Chris Farley.

I began to spiral out of control. At 18, I got off the needle permanently. I still dealt with drugs off and on but I was able to sober up with no rehab. I realized that I was helpless and I started crying out to Jesus.

Unless you have dealt with an addiction, you don’t know what an addict goes through. Most people say to just quit using. They have obviously never dealt with an addiction. It is a disease. You have to be ready to change.

The Bible tells us not to put anything above God. Drugs came before God. It wasn’t until I turned to God and said, “Lord, I am ready to change. I am the done. Please let the Holy Spirit touch me and give me strength “.

Instantly, I felt a change. I knew I had to do my part. God helps those that help themselves. I cut so many people out of my life. I was not going to continue to change if I continued to be around other users.

Are you suffering from addiction? If so, take it to the Lord. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Don’t hesitate to send me an email. Addiction may be strong, but God is stronger.
