Compassion

There are so many things in life that have taught me compassion and empathy for others. Whether it is going through an abusive childhood or dealing with terminal illnesses with family members. My mom has dealt with a serious disease for years. My stepdad has a terminal disease. My biological father was diagnosed with lung cancer.

I cried out to God asking, “Why God?” Why do you let bad illnesses fall on good people? I could be angry with God,but I can’t. He is keeping them alive. Many times they could have died, but God would intervene everytime. It taught me to be a compassionate person.

When someone is struggling or hurting or sick or carrying a burden, we are suppose to be caring. We are suppose to be examples of God’s Love. As Christians, we are called to help. We need to help pick up the burdens of our brothers and sisters.

Carry each others burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galations 6:2 NIV

Our God is a merciful God. Our God is compassionate. He gave his son to die on the cross so we could be forgiven. The Bible tells us that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend. That is what Jesus did for us.

And the Lord said, “I will cause my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Exodus 33:19

God promises to be compassionate. How can we expect God to be compassionate with us when we can’t be compassionate to one another? How can we expect blessings from God when we don’t bless each other?

We need to encourage one another. Help one another. Feel for each other as Jesus feels for us. As Christians, we are like-minded. We are covered by the blood of Christ. Be there for one another and do for others without doing it selfishly or in vain.

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition and vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Phillipians 2:1-3 NIV
