Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. Psalms 1:1-2 NIV
When we are saved by Grace and justified by Faith and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, we go through a transformation. We are commanded to live in righteousness. Our justification made us righteous and when you love Jesus, you want to do your best to be like Jesus.
Notice the wording in the verse. Do not walk in step with sinners. Do not be a follower because everyone is doing it.
Do not stand in the way sinners take. Do not join with people mocking and stoop to their level. Do not participate in evil just because someone else is.
Notice that it does not say to not hang out with sinners. For one, everyone is a sinner so that would mean no one could hang out with any of them. Jesus was a friend of sinners. We are too. We are to be in this world and not of this world.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. Psalms 1:3 NIV
